Periimplantitis from prevention to management with Nikos Mardas.
Biologic complications: from prevention to treatment
Current clinical evidence has positioned implants as the first choice of treatment for partially or fully edentulous patients and has influenced the decision to extract periodontally affected teeth, which in several cases may be treatable. At the same time a “new disease”, known as peri-implantitis, has emerged especially when dental implants are placed in-patient with a history of periodontal disease. This presentation critically appraises the available literature on the risk for biologic complications around dental implants and will present the current consensus on different treatment modalities of peri-implant disease and discuss its limitations based on our clinical experience and recent research findings from our group. The presentation addresses the implant clinician and is based on clinical case presentation, interactive discussions and debate.
Aim: To provide an update on the risk assessment and management of peri-implantitis
Objectives:
The participants will be able to:
- Identify the possible risk factors associated with the development and progression of peri-implantitis
- Develop a treatment rationale and decide when to explant and when to consider other non-surgical or surgical options
- Discuss the indications and limitations related to the application of resective and reconstructive treatment options
