MMPPI and 10 Keys for Immediate Implant placement

Speaker Bio

Dr. Robert A. Levine maintains a private practice in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Center for Dental Implants and Periodontics. He graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1981, received his post-grad certificate in Periodontics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984 and is presently a Clinical Professor in Post-Graduate Periodontics and Dental Implantology at the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry at Chapel Hill and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry at Chicago. Dr. Levine is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, Fellow of the College of Physicians in Philadelphia (FCPP), President-Elect and Fellow of the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons (FISPPS), and a Fellow and Board of Directors of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO). He has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally and has or presently serves on the Editorial Boards of numerous international scientific dental journals (including International Journal of Oral & Maxilofacial Implants, Journal of Periodontology, International Journal of Periodontics & Restorative Dentistry, Clinical Implant Dentistry & Related Research and Compendium) and has authored close to 90 publications and 4 book chapters. He is also a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) of Basel, Switzerland and was invited to participate in the 4th  thru 7th ITI Consensus Conferences to establish treatment protocols for implant dentistry worldwide. Dr. Levine also shares his knowledge and 39 years of clinical experience with periodontal, prosthodontic, and general practice residencies throughout the United States and abroad as a visiting professor and mentor. He presently leads a “The 10 Keys Implant-Perio Clinical Research Group” with Dr. Mauricio Araujo from the University of Maringa, Brazil with multiple publications on immediate implant placement in the maxillary central incisor, where the most esthetic zone implant complications are documented.

Lecture Will moderated By Dr. Rami Nazarian, D.D.S. FICOI

Part 1: “The Use of the MMPPI in Clinical Practice: Benefits in Achieving Long-Term Periodontal and Systemic Health for our Patients.”

The Miller-McEntire Periodontal Prognosis Index (MMPPI) combines 7 factors (age, smoking, diabetes: HgA1c %, molar type, probing depth, furcation and mobility) which provides a score that gives the patient an actual percentage of the likelihood they will keep their teeth for 15 and 30 years and not lose them to periodontal disease based on scoring of the worst molar that is planned to be kept. The science supporting this research was published in the Journal of Periodontology in 2014 (P.D. Miller et al) and Dr. Miller received the prestigious Clinical Research Award from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) in 2015. As “physicians of the mouth,” Dr. Levine uses the MMPPI for all patients and believes the use of the MMPPI significantly motivates patients to accept treatment and to take responsibility as an active participant/co-therapist in planning their treatment resulting in the “achievement of their long-term periodontal and systemic health.” Drs. Levine and Miller strongly believe that the routine use of the MMPPI should become the “standard of care” especially for patients who present with numerous “risk factors” to long-term success.” Dr. Levine has recently presented with Dr. Miller an International Webinar (2018) supported by Millennium Dental Technologies, ™ on this topic with and has co-published with Dr. Miller in the Textbook entitled “Advances in Periodontal Surgery: A Clinical Guide to Techniques and Interdisciplinary Approaches;” 2019: Chapter 1 (Dr. Sal Nares, editor; Springer International Publishing). In 2021, Dr. M. Saleh et al has published that the MMPPI is the most accurate and easiest to use Prognosis Index that we can use with our patients out of the 10 most used in our profession.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this section, participants should be able to:

1.    Describe the use and benefits of the MMPPI in clinical practice as “physicians of the mouth”

2.    Recognize how the use of the MMPPI translates clinical outcomes (periodontal therapies) into patient “value” (case acceptance)

3.    Describe how your “team” as health-care professionals are empowered by the use of the MMPPI in helping patients to actively change life-style behaviors to improve their periodontal and dental implant long-term prognosis

Part 2: “Immediate Maxillary Central Incisor Implants: “10 Keys” to Esthetic Success.”

This course will address the close interaction of the implant surgeon with the restorative dentist and dental laboratory in achieving optimal esthetic outcomes and reduced patient morbidity in the treatment of the maxillary central incisor. This area of the mouth experiences the most complications we see in implant dentistry when a surgical and prosthetic “checklist” is not followed.  Dr. Levine will emphasize the “team approach” involving comprehensive diagnosis and surgical/prosthetic treatment using the “10 Keys” approach (Compend Contin Ed Dent; RA Levine, J Ganeles, JYK Kan, et al 2017; 2018). Dr. Levine will share his 39 years in full time periodontal practice with initial data of a clinical and CBCT study (1 to 26 years) and recommendations based on using the “10 Keys” approach. Practice management techniques will also be addressed for improving case acceptance and how the “team approach” can make this process seamless, successful and personally rewarding.

“He who fails to plan is planning to fail.” Sir Winston Churchill

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

1.    Recognize the “human factors” that can be the primary causes of technical and environmental complications in the field of implant dentistry (F Renouard, et al Journ Oral Maxillofac Implants; 2017) due to the lack of “check-lists”

2.    Identify the success factors and complications in the treatment of the maxillary central incisor

3.    Describe the “10 Keys” approach and its use as a diagnostic, surgical and prosthetic check-list to avoid esthetic zone complications based on documented case reports presented
