Making sense of the science behind the ART (antiresorptive therapy) and how it affects implant treatment
The use of dental implants in the treatment of partial or complete edentulism is on the rise as its clinical success prompts many (patients and clinicians alike) to accepting it as a standard of care. Concomitantly, on another front, there is an increasing use of bisphosphonates and other emerging antiresorptive drugs (ARDs) for the treatment of several medical conditions. These two fronts are beginning to converge, more frequently than before, as the population ages. It is pertinent to understand how ARDs may affect dental implant treatment. The literature behind the effects of ARDs on dental implants is mixed and controversial. How do we make sense of the available evidence?
