About the Scholarship Center

Nestled in the heart of Montreal, a city renowned for its vibrant culture, rich history, and bilingualism, McGill University is a top-ranked academic institution that offers students a unique and enriching educational experience. The ITI Scholarship at the McGill Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences is based within the Division of Periodontics. ITI Scholars work directly with Dr. Thomas Nguyen, the associate director of the division. They also have access to other faculty members representing the various specialties involved in implant dentistry. The clinical activities take place within the state-of-the-art McGill Teaching Clinic. ITI Scholars will also have the opportunity to spend time at some of the other teaching hospitals. Applicants with advanced graduate education in periodontics or prosthodontics are preferred.

The ITI Scholar will participate in the following clinical activities:

  • Treatment planning sessions
  • Observing clinical patient treatment
  • Assisting in patient treatment
  • Treating patients under supervision
    · placing implants
    · restoring implants
  • Treating patients alone             
    ·  placing implants
    ·  restoring implants

The Scholar's time will be allocated to the following activities as follows (estimate):

  • 40% patient care
  • 40% research
  • 20% didactic
     

The scholar will have the opportunity of providing patient care at the McGill implant clinic under the mentorship of specialists in periodontics and prosthodontics. Depending on the candidate’s experience and level of comfort, the scholar will be trained in a wide range of surgical and restorative treatments and the be involved in comprehensive implant dentistry, including treatment planning, surgical placement, and restoration of dental implants.

The experience of each incoming scholar will be individualized and tailored to their backgrounds and motivation. Scholars will have opportunities to onboard on multiple research projects, participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning and gain experience in teaching dental students the fundamentals of implantology. Additionally, clinical teaching of predoctoral students for at least one day per week is part of the scholar’s curriculum.

Milestone plans and timelines will be established for the scholar to ensure that his/her experience culminates in research presentations, such as at the ITI conference and in scientific publication of results. Opportunities will be available for participation in the local ITI study club, regional and national implantology meetings.

Special requirements for this Scholarship Center

The right to come to work and study in Canada is determined by Immigration Canada. The right to provide the full range of supervised treatment and care to patients, including surgical and prosthodontic care, is regulated by the licensing authority, the Order of Dentists of Quebec. Once accepted by the ITI with proof of funding, the successful ITI Scholar must apply to Immigration Canada at the Canadian Embassy in their home country for a work permit for Canada. The ITI Scholar must also apply to the Order of Dentists for an educational license and pay the same licensing fees that all postgraduate students in Quebec must also pay.

· Canadian work permit
· Educational license from the Order of Dentists of Quebec
· TOEFL or IELTS certificate for non-native English speaker
