Building Bone from Stem Cells – The New Gold Standard?
This lecture describes the planning, execution, and preliminary results of a clinical study aimed at augmenting bone in the atrophic posterior mandible using granular biphasic calcium phosphate seeded with autogenous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and covered with a titanium reinforced ePTFE membrane. Data from the first 11 augmented patients show promising results.
At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…
- recognize different donor sites for harvesting mesenchymal stem cells
- understand that the use of mesenchymal stem cells to augment maxillofacial bones is still at an experimental stage
- respect the time and funds needed to provide clinical evidence for the use of new techniques
