Surgical Alternatives for the Completely Edentulous Maxilla

Waldemar Daudt Polido

Rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla is always a complex task that requires a comprehensive treatment plan. Patients desire implant-supported prostheses with minimal future complications. With this in mind the treatment plan must start with an evaluation of patient expectations, with the definite prosthesis as the starting point as well as the final goal. Patients should be presented with the risks of different surgical approaches as well as the required maintenance procedures for different rehabilitations so that these factors are included in the decision-making process. This lecture addresses all of the aforementioned points, leaving the viewer with a clear “big picture” for full-arch maxillary reconstructions.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • explain the challenges in rehabilitating the edentulous maxilla
  • describe the diagnostic steps that lead to the decision of a fixed vs. removable prosthesis
  • discuss prosthodontic concepts for the edentulous maxilla
