About the Scholarship Center

The ITI Scholarship at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) is based in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences. ITI Scholars work directly with Dr. Gallucci, the department chair, who is trained in both prosthodontics and periodontics. They also have access to other faculty members representing the various specialties involved in implant dentistry. The clinical activities take place within the state-of-the-art Harvard Faculty Practice. Applicants with advanced graduate education in periodontics, prosthodontics or other significant restorative dentistry experience are preferred.

Please note: The Scholarship program runs from July 1 to June 30.

Overview of clinical activities during the Scholarship year

Activities during the Scholarship year

During the Scholarship year, the ITI Scholar will participate in the following clinical activities: 

☒      Treatment planning sessions  
☐      Performing oral hygiene procedures and maintenance   
☒      Observing patient treatment  
☒      Assisting in patient treatment  
☒      Treating patients under faculty supervision 
     ☒      Placing implants  
     ☒      Restoring implants  
☐      Treating patients alone  
     ☐      Placing implants  
     ☐      Restoring implants  
☒      Laboratory and procedures associated with treatment 

ITI Scholars will need to obtain a limited license to work with patients. All applications for Limited Intern Licenses need to be approved by HSDM before beginning the application process.

Language skills and level needed to work with/treat patients: English 

In the Harvard Faculty Practice, ITI Scholars are involved in patient care, i.e. primarily comprehensive implant dentistry, including treatment planning, surgical placement and restoration of dental implants. Additionally, clinical teaching of predoctoral students for at least one day per week is part of the program. ITI Scholars also have access to lectures and interdisciplinary seminars offered in HSDM's advanced graduate specialty programs. Involvement in research or other scholarly activities is recommended and available on an ad hoc basis.

During the Scholarship year, the ITI Scholar will participate in the following research activities: 

☒    Development and coordinated involvement with existing center research activities 
☐      Involvement in preclinical research  
☒      Involvement in translational research 
☒      Involvement in clinical research   
☒      Mentors will be assigned to the Scholar according to their research preference  
☒      Scholars will be able to start their own research projects 
 
The Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate): 
 
•    40  % patient care 
•    40 % research 
•    20 % didactic (lectures and/or courses the Scholar can attend) 

The lectures, classes and/or courses the Scholar can attend will be held in the following language: English

Special requirements for this Scholarship Center

Language requirements: 
☒      Fluency in English 
☒      TOEFL or IELTS certificate as proof of proficiency in English (for non-native English speakers) by the beginning of the ITI Scholarship year.  
☒     Language required for treating patients (legal requirements): English 

The state of Massachusetts requires a TOEFL or IELTS certificate as proof of proficiency in English (for non-native-English Speakers) by the beginning of the ITI Scholarship program. This will allow the ITI Scholar to obtain a limited license, which is issued by the Board of Registration in Dentistry in Massachusetts. The limited license is necessary to work with patients. The language certificate must be valid (no older than two years) at the time of application for the limited license. The ITI Scholar is responsible for organizing and providing the required language certificate. Special requirements: 

Minimum 3 years' clinical experience or at least two years' postgraduate training in Periodontology, Oral surgery, Prosthodontics or Oral Implantology. Research experience supported by scientific publications (original papers) is desired.
