The Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry has over 25 years of experience in treating patients using osseointegrated implants and restoring them with implant-supported reconstructions. The majority of these patients are partially edentulous and comprehensively treated in every discipline of dental medicine by the faculty and the post-graduate students of the clinic. Many patients desire optimal esthetic treatment results and, hence, the clinic places special emphasis on the esthetic aspects of treatment. More than two-thirds of the implantation procedures are performed in conjunction with bone and/or soft tissue augmentation using GBR and biomaterials or bone grafts.

The clinic is organized in 3 divisions comprising reconstructive dentistry, oral implantology and dental material science. Research is carried out in the fields of bone and soft tissue regeneration, implant integration into hard and soft tissues, loading protocols, conventional and full-ceramic reconstructions, minimally invasive therapies, digital workflow and basic research in dental material science (Prof. Dr. Ronald Jung, PhD; Prof. Dr. Mutlu Özcan, PhD; Prof. Dr. Daniel Thoma; Prof. Dr. Tim Joda, PhD; PD Dr. Nadja Nänni; PD Dr. Alexis Ioannidis; Dr. Marc Balmer; Dr. Stefan Bienz; Dr. Elena Mühlemann; Dr. Fabienne Baumann).

The Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry of the University of Zürich offers both undergraduate education and a structured 3-year full-time postgraduate program as well as a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Oral Implantology. The clinical focus of the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry lies in the treatment of complex and aesthetically challenging cases using all aspects of reconstructive, regenerative and implant dentistry. In addition, the interdisciplinary team for periimplantitis (IPS) at the Center of Dental Medicine which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of peri-implant diseases is under the leadership of the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry. 

The Scholars have access to all these activities, which include lectures, practical trainings, synoptic student courses, attending seminar programs, literature discussions, hands-on workshops as well as attending the clinics courses for continuing education and attending national and international congresses. 

The Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry of the University of Zürich is world know for highly relevant and impactful research activities. A large number of single and multi-center clinical studies are conducted with special focus on implant dentistry, regenerative procedures, fixed and removable prosthodontics and dental eHealth. Since there is a long history of conducting preclinical and clinical research, the scholar is able to deeply immerge into all types of research activities performed at the Clinic.   

Thus, the scholar will be involved in all aspects of education, research and clinical activies that is ongoing at our clinic. The work environment is very inspiring and enthusiastic with an international team of Key opinion leaders, postgraduate students and study managers. Together with an amazing team of friends and colleagues every scholar will become part of an international network that will lay the base of a lifelong personal and professional relationship.

During the Scholarship year, the ITI Scholar will participate in the following clinical activities:

Observing and taking part in Laboratory procedures; In-house Labs can be visited and all procedures can always be observed by the scholar. 

For the following reasons ITI Scholars are not normally able to treat patients: Swiss regulations and licenses are not feasible to obtain for a one-years scholarship (short stay) 

Language skills and level needed to work with/treat patients: English 

All clinical, laboratory, educational and research procedures can always be observed by the scholar. Scholars are actively involved in all daily activities of the Clinic.

During the Scholarship year, the ITI Scholar will participate in the following research activities:

The Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry at the University of Zürich is performing multiple preclinical, translational and clinical research projects per year. The ITI scholar is highly encouraged and supported to star their own research project during the time at the University of Zürich 

The Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate): 

• 20% patient care 
• 65% research 
• 15% didactic (lectures and/or courses the Scholar can attend) 

The lectures, classes and/or courses the Scholar can attend will be held in the following language: English/German 

Scholars are added to the Topic List of ITI Study Clubs in Switzerland and can be invited as speakers by the respective Study Club Directors. 

ITI Scholars at our clinic are able to learn about every phase of therapy using dental implants, including treatment planning, execution of preparatory, surgical and prosthetic as well as follow-up therapy. They take part in weekly treatment planning sessions, literature discussions and seminars. There is also a monthly journal club meeting that includes all the journals that are relevant in the field of implant and reconstructive dentistry.

ITI Scholars can observe and assist in surgical and restorative procedures on a daily basis, experiencing each step of a comprehensive therapy from the initial examination to the surgical phase until the final reconstruction. ITI Scholars cannot treat patients independently. ITI Scholars are further involved in the clinic’s continuing education courses on surgical and prosthetic topics related to implant dentistry. Research activities as co-investigators in the above-mentioned fields are encouraged.

 

Language requirements:

☒ Fluency in English
☒ Basic language skills in German are an advantage

Special requirements:

At least two years' postgraduate training in Periodontology/Prosthodontics/Implantology is an advantage. Research experience supported by scientific publications (original papers) is desired.
