The Significance of Anti-Resorptive Drugs in Implant Dentistry

Andrew read Dentistry (1981) and Medicine (1990) at Trinity College, Dublin graduating with Honours in both.

He undertook Higher Surgical Training in the Northern Deanery based at Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Newcastle and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training in 1997. During this time, he worked abroad in units in India, China and the United States (Columbus, Ohio; Fort Woth, Texas and Memorial Hospital, New York City). 

He was appointed to his first Consultant post with NHS Ayrshire & Arran in the same year. He moved to NHS Lanarkshire in 2003 to a Head & Neck oncology/Craniomaxillofacial trauma practice. He remained there until 2020 when he retired from the NHS.

Private practice has been primarily at Scottish Centre for Excellence in Dentistry and its previous incarnation at Niddrie Square.

He has a longstanding commitment to Postgraduate Medical Education and has been a CMF faculty member of the AO Foundation – UK, European and International Boards – for over 30 years lecturing, teaching and operating worldwide, on craniomaxillofacial trauma and reconstructive topics.

Andrew is a keen runner and a member of Troon Tortoises AC. He realises that, as time marches on, his sub-3 marathon days are a thing of the past.

Title: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with implant and regenerative treatments.

Learnings Objectives:

  • An overview as to whether treatment with bisphosphonates and other anti-resorptive and antiangiogenic agents influences the success of regenerative and/or implant treatments.
  • To review the effects of systemic disease and medications on implant integration.
  • To suggest advice/information to provide patients undergoing these treatments who have received these drugs.


Dr Greg Wilson, Consultant in Oncology, Christie Hospital, Manchester

Dr Wilson graduated in Medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1988 and, after working as a junior doctor in the UK, spent four years in Australia, working firstly in general medicine and then at Advanced Trainee level in Medical and Radiation Oncology in Sydney. After returning to the UK, he completed Specialist Training in Medical Oncology at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. He was appointed to the post of Consultant Medical Oncologist in the fields of breast and colorectal cancer at The Christie in 2002.

Dr Wilson is a Senior Consultant in Breast and Colorectal Cancer in Manchester.  He has a particular interest in complex metastatic disease and believes in personalised oncology care, where maintaining the patient’s lifestyle is paramount.

He is lead clinician for Liver Directed Therapy and Selective Internal Radiation Therapy for secondary liver tumours at The Christie.

Title: “Anti-resorptive agents in Oncology”: Indications, benefits, common usage and risks of ONJ/M.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the importance and prevalence of these drugs in clinical oncology practice.
  • To have a better feel for the risk benefit analysis in patients undergoing implant surgery on these drugs.
  • To make more informed decisions regarding implant surgery in these patients in clinical practice.
