Romancing the bone: New directions in bone manipulation

The last few decades have seen remarkable strides in our understanding of the process of osseointegration, soft tissue integration, implant aesthetics, guided surgery, navigation surgery etc. While the greatest focus has been on improving implant surfaces, implant-abutment connections, soft tissue development etc., not much has been done in the area of osteotomy preparation, which is the very bedrock of all the proceeding events.

In 2014, the concept of Osseodensification was introduced by Dr.SalahHuwais, who revolutionized the process of osteotomy preparation by shifting from Extraction drilling, which is the conventional drilling protocol , to Oseodensification, that relies on autocompaction of autologous bone chips into the osteotomy, preserving the bulk of bone, with far reaching clinical implications and applications including improved primary stability, ridge expansion and crestal sinus elevation. This presentation will describe the rationale, concept, clinical protocols and applications of Osseodensification using appropriate clinical cases .
