Guided Bone Regeneration: Evidence and Techniques for Predictable Ridge Augmentation

Murad Hadi Shaqman

Using three clinical cases, the lecturer describes his step-by-step approach for guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedures in different clinical situations. For each case, the timing of implant placement - early or late - is discussed. The selection of a simultaneous or staged approach for the bone grafting procedure is also explained. This presentation highlights prosthodontically driven implant placement and gives details on techniques and materials for each clinical situation. The use of a composite graft is discussed, as is the proper handling of resorbable membranes and the importance of decortication. One clinical case demonstrates the use of a titanium membrane. Pertinent literature is cited to provide an evidence base for this presentation.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • recognize the key elements for a guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedure
  • explain clinical elements for GBR procedures
  • discuss the rationale for using a composite graft
