Pathway

Implant Removal and Site Reconstruction

Removal of an integrated implant is not a common procedure, but there are situations that call for this technique. This Learning Pathway, which is based on a lecture by Waldemar Polido and is supported by three clinical cases, looks at the indications for implant removal, the surgical techniques that can be used to effect the removal of an implant, and techniques to reconstruct the site to allow insertion of a replacement implant.

On completion of this Learning Pathway you should be able to…

  • identify the indications for removing an integrated implant
  • describe the basic principles for implant removal
  • list the available surgical techniques for implant removal
  • describe the rehabilitation strategies available for use after implant removal
