About the Scholarship Center
The ITI Scholarship program at the University of Connecticut encompasses a flexible, scholar-driven program of clinical and didactic education and research in implant dentistry. ITI Scholars share their time between the Divisions of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Prosthodontics. Surgical and prosthodontic experience is provided.
Overview of clinical activities during the Scholarship year
Division of Prosthodontics
The ITI Scholar will participate in the following clinical activities:
- Treatment planning sessions
- Observing clinical patient treatment
- Assisting in patient treatment
- Treating patients under supervision
- placing implants
- restoring implants
- Treating patients alone
- restoring implants
The Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate):
- 65% patient care
- 35% research
ITI Scholars can expect to gain extensive surgical experience, primarily as surgical assistants to OMFS faculty and will gain experience as prosthodontic treatment providers for selected cases, with observation and exposure to a wide variety of prosthodontic and surgical clinical situations. There is an excellent opportunity for potential research participation in ongoing basic science, mechanical, or clinical research projects.
It must be emphasized that the ITI Scholar's program year will reflect the ITI Scholar's personal wish for experience. Those wishing to further their surgical exposure will spend more time with the surgical faculty while those interested in prosthodontics will spend the majority of their time in the prosthodontic clinic. ITI Scholars will participate in case conference and treatment planning seminars as well as other didactic exposure as agreed to between faculty and the ITI Scholar. The key to this Scholarship opportunity is flexibility in surgical and prosthodontic experience. If interested, the Scholar will participate in ongoing research projects within the school.
