Medical University Graz, Division of Oral Surgery and Orthodontics, Department of Dental Medicine & Oral Health
About the Scholarship Center
The Division of Oral Surgery and Orthodontics comprises a general dental primary care unit and several specialty units such as Oral Medicine, Oral Radiology, and Orthodontics as well as a unit for Oral Surgery, Implant Surgery and Tissue Regeneration. More than 30,000 patients are treated within the division’s facilities every year. The three surgical units dedicated to the division are used for about 2,000 interventions each year – of those approximately 700 are implant surgeries and augmentative and reconstructive procedures. Endodontic surgery and tooth transplantations are further focus areas. As the Department of Dental Medicine and Oral Health moved to a larger and brand new building in 2015, the number of patients treated is likely to further increase in the future.
A major focus for us in dental education is to impart a deep theoretical knowledge to facilitate extensive clinical training for the development of good practical skills for our students. The high number of patients consulting the clinic in Graz gives us the possibility to involve both graduate and postgraduate students closely in the daily routine.
Overview of clinical activities during the Scholarship year
The ITI Scholar will participate in the following clinical activities:
- Treatment planning sessions
- Observing clinical patient treatment
- Assisting in patient treatment
- Treating patients under supervision (at least one case)
- placing implants
- restoring implants
The Scholar's time will be allocated to the following activities as follows (estimate):
- 70% patient care
- 30% research
We aim to organize an attractive and practically oriented program for the visiting Scholars. Scholars will be able to participate in all aspects of implant-based care. Scholars will work in a team environment under the direction and constant supervision of the Scholarship Center faculty and may be involved in conducting research.
As treatment planning and the ensuing dental rehabilitation of patients is in most cases an interdisciplinary undertaking together with other divisions as well as external dentists or by the division alone, ITI Scholars will get valuable insight into different types of collaboration.
Scholars will be fully integrated guests of our division and be involved in post-graduate courses consisting of theory sessions and hands-on cadaver courses held and organized several times a year.
In order to extend their scientific activities, we encourage ITI Scholars to get involved in new or active scientific projects in our division. In this way, Scholars can integrate themselves further into the division’s agenda and continue to develop their own scientific career and network.
We highly encourage colleagues to apply for an ITI Scholarship at our Center and we promise to do our best to make this year a valuable and unforgettable experience in the career of ITI Scholars.
