South Calgary Oral Surgery ITI Study Club
Title: Comprehensive review on Peri-implantitis; diagnosis, risk factors and treatment including Galvosurg and Introduction to a global implant data analysis via “The Registry”.
Learning Objectives
Part 1 Peri- implantitis
- Understand the complexity of Peri implant diagnosis and how this affects prevalence and intervention decisions.
- Understand the risk factors for peri- implantitis and how you can reduce risk by proper planning.
- Learn the various treatment modalities and the success rates expected from conservative intervention , reduction and regeneration procedures.
Part 2 Introduction to the Registry
- Understand the value of data in evaluating your own implant success and failure to help with your treatment protocol decision making.
- Learn how to assess your own success rate on various protocols against a world wide benchmark and determine what to change .
- Understand research “blind spot” of real world clinical outcomes versus controlled trials, which leads to clinical experimentation on your patients.

Dr. French studied Dentistry at University of Alberta graduating with the Gold Medal for first in class in 1991 then completed specialty degree in Periodontics at the University of British Columbia and returned to Calgary to start a full-time private practice in Periodontics and Dental Implants .
Dr French was President of the Calgary & District Dental Society in 2000. Dr. French Founded Comprehensive treatment planning study club and the Alberta Dental Implant Academy.
Dr French is a part time instructor and researcher at UBC and a Fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI). Dr French is also a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Academy of Osseointegration and the European Academy of Osseointegration.
He is a published author of Post Market Clinical Studies; including the largest Retrospective study on 4591 Straumann implants and a retrospective study on 10,871 implants with up to 22 years of follow-up. Dr French developed the Implant Mucosal Index and the Tri-factorial classification for osteotome sinus elevation. Dr French has also developed, in coordination with Straumann ‘the Registry” which is the worlds largest secure and interactive database on dental implants globally.
Dr French has been podium speaker to the Canadian Academy of Periodontology in 2008 and 2012, the Nobelbiocare Global Forum 2015 , Regional ITI 2015 in Montreal, International ITI 2016 in Chicago and the IADR 2016 in Seoul Korea, the National ITI Montreal in 2018 & San Francisco 2019 and recently the ITI North America 2023 in Miami and most recently launched the Straumann Registry at the Global ITI 2024 in Singapore.
In his spare time Dr French is “Papa” to two wonderful daughters, an avid windsurfer, kitesurfer, year round cyclist and enjoys rebuilding vintage alfa romeo cars.
