"Clinical periodontal regeneration; fact and fiction"
Reconstructive (regenerative) periodontal therapy is a combination of flap design, surgical procedures and use of biomaterials that result in effective and predictable outcomes for the treatment of isolated and multiple intrabony defects. Several studies have shown improved clinical results in terms of attachment gain, reduction of probing depth, bleeding on probing and radiographic appearance of defect filling.
There is however still a variability of the outcomes among different studies which may be explained, by several factors related to the patient related factors, defect related factors and operator related factors such as surgical procedure (flap design; approach ; suture technique and postoperative management). This presentation will overview in a critical way the current evidence and limitations about reconstructive periodontal therapy with special focus on the regeneration of intrabony defects around single root teeth.
