Dealing with implant complications
In association with the University of Central Lancashire, School of Dentistry and supported by VSSAcademy.
Course information
This ITI Education Week, taking place at UCLan (University of Central Lancashire) in Preston, near Manchester, has been designed for clinicians with experience in the field of implant dentistry.
The program focuses on dealing with complications which can arise in implant dentistry, and soft tissue surgery. With a comprehensive and practical curriculum, it will educate in all aspects related to the topic, including
- Types of complications and how to avoid them
- Sinus lift procedures and techniques
- Implant removal techniques
- Abutment screw removal technique
- Live sinus lift surgery demonstration
This three-day course includes lectures and discussion, hands-on surgical skills practice on complication topics on models, pigs jaws, fresh human cadavers and live surgeries.

Learning objectives
Aims:
- To discuss and demonstrate current techniques available for implant fixture and screw removal.
- To discuss and demonstrate sinus lift techniques and avoiding complications.
- To discuss and demonstrate management and augmentation techniques for dealing with soft tissue complications in implant sites. This will include before implant placement, at exposure and with implants already in situ.
- To discuss prevention of complications
Objectives:
1. By the end of the course the delegates should have the knowledge and understanding of techniques for
- Implant fixture removal
- Implant screw removal
- Safe and predictable sinus lift techniques
- Soft tissue complication management
2. The delegates to have hands on experience of the techniques for
- Implant fixture removal
- Screw removal
- Sinus lift procedures
- Soft tissue augmentation
3. Delegates to have a risk assessment system for avoiding complications
Course details
Day 1 - Thursday 20th October 2022 9am - 5p
Morning: Lectures and discussion
- Types of complications and how to avoid them
- Sinus lift procedures and techniques
- Implant removal techniques
- Abutment screw removal techniques
Afternoon: Hands-on workshops
- Complications procedures using pigs heads/models and placed implants, e.g. implant removal
- Sinus lift demo*
* The live surgery demonstrations will be dependent on patients' consent and attendance. There is always the possibility that they might change their minds at the last minute and despite our contingency plans, there is a risk of no surgery. Therefore although we are planning this element, please be aware it may not be possible to observe it on the course
Implants will be placed in real bone and synthetic models with appropriate numbers for each delegate to try the various techniques.
Day 2 - Friday 21st October 2022. 9am - 5pm
Morning: Lectures and discussion
- Soft tissue augmentation techniques for dealing with complications e.g. where there is a lack of volume or keratinised mucosa:
- Pre-implant placement
- At implant exposure
- Implant in situ
Afernoon: Hands-on skills practice
- Pigs heads soft tissue grafting exercises
Grafting techniques for dealing with soft tissue complications in implant sites will be practiced using pigs jaws. This will include the use of xenografts.
Day 3 - Saturday 22nd October 2022 9am - 5pm
All day: Hands-on skills practice
- Soft tissue grafting exercises, sinus lifts, bone grafting, implant removal using fresh human cadavers
