Zirconia – the Implant Material of the Future?

Stefan Röhling

In recent years, ceramic implants have become an attractive and reliable alternative to titanium implants. Currently, zirconia is the material of choice for the fabrication of ceramic dental implants because it demonstrates superior biomechanical properties compared to other ceramics. This lecture presents current evidence-based background information on zirconia as a material for dental implants. Optimized manufacturing processes can now produce fracture-proof zirconia implants with a similar surface topography to micro-rough titanium implants. This lecture shows that these modern zirconia dental implants can be used as clinically reliable alternatives to titanium implants. Although some clinicians remain skeptical about using ceramic implants, experimental and clinical studies have confirmed the reliability of the newest generation of zirconia implants.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • describe the current evidence-based experimental and clinical findings on zirconia as a material for dental implants
  • describe advantages and limitations of zirconia dental implants
  • discuss clinical applications of zirconia dental implants
