Surgical Management of the Posterior Mandible

Waldemar Daudt Polido

Vertical deficiency of the posterior mandible is a common scenario in daily practice. In this lecture, Dr. Polido explains the advantages and disadvantages of several main techniques (GBR, distraction osteogenesis, interpositional bone graft, onlay bone graft, growth factors) based on best evidence available in literature. He discusses the onlay bone grafting technique in depth from the perspectives of incision design, surgical access, flap mobilization and closure, bone graft dimension, selection of graft materials, growth factors, titanium mesh, etc. Recommendations about surgical techniques based on ITI Consensus Statements and complication rates for vertical bone augmentation complete the lecture.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • recognize the main techniques for vertical bone augmentation of the posterior mandible

  • select clinical indications where vertical grafting may be advantageous

  • identify potential risks and pitfalls of grafts
