Managing of Prosthetic Complications in Elderly Patients

Martin Schimmel

This lecture presents demographic data on patients seeking implant treatment as well as information about the elderly patient population as a whole. The relationship between aging, tooth loss, and the need for implants is presented in detail. Novel approaches for the treatment of edentulous patients are shared along with details about treatment modifications necessary in the elderly. Special emphasis is given to digital workflow techniques related to denture production. Common complications seen in this patient population are explained, and the importance of oral hygiene in the prevention of maintenance-related complications is underlined. Technical complications such as aspiration or swallowing of dentures or implant parts are also discussed. The important role of loss of autonomy in elderly patients is explained as a risk factor for complications.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • discuss the demographic changes in the implant-seeking population
  • understand gerodontology and geriatrics as they relate to implant treatment
