Treatment Outcomes and Continuing Care

Management of Periodontally Compromised Patients before and after Dental Implant Placement

Bernard Jean Alliot

This lecture emphasizes the importance of discussing the increased risk for biological as well as esthetic complications with patients who have a history of periodontal disease. The key to enhancing long-term survival of implants in periodontally compromised patients is a strict supportive and maintenance care program.

The lecture goes on to discuss whether risk factors such as diabetes and smoking are contra-indications for implant therapy and how they affect treatment outcomes in periodontally compromised patients.

The lecture concludes with several clinical cases where the speaker covers the treatment planning process for periodontally compromised patients who require implant therapy, and their long-term management following placement.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • recognize that patients with a history of periodontal disease demonstrate a higher risk of peri-implant diseases
  • identify risk factors for implant therapy which may affect treatment outcomes
  • recognize that supportive periodontal therapy is the key factor in enhancing long-term survival of implants in periodontally compromised patients
