Does Patient Maintenance and Prosthesis Design Influence Bone and Soft Tissue Maintenance?

Jonathan D Lack

Based on a description of the differences between periodontal and peri-implant tissues, peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis are defined. Preventive measures to avoid peri-implant infection are listed, and treatment strategies are outlined, including cumulative interceptive supportive therapy (CIST) for peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. The available and increasing evidence for the importance of a zone of keratinized peri-implant mucosa to preserve healthy peri-implant tissues long-term is presented. Finally, the lecturer underlines the importance of designing prosthetic superstructures with adequate access for proper diagnostics and home care for the patient.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • describe the anatomic differences between gingiva and peri-implant mucosa
  • recognize the importance of long-term professional and personal maintenance to avoid biologic complications
  • list preventive measures to avoid peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis as well as treatment strategies for these conditions
  • recognize that lack of keratinized mucosa may increase the risk of biologic complications
  • explain that implant-retained superstructures should be designed to allow examination and effective cleaning
