Does Implant-Abutment Design Influence Bone and Soft Tissue?

This lecture presents histomorphometric studies to demonstrate the strong relationship between bone and implant design, especially at the implant-abutment interface. The presenter shares key factors to explain the response of hard and soft tissue at the very first step of osseointegration. He focuses on the interaction between the design of the implant and the bone physiology. He develops the relationship between bone resorption and the inflammatory response of the host. The presenter also discusses different ways to decrease the inflammatory response at the implant-abutment interface. Supported by literature, a complete review of the various implant designs and their interactions with the bone is presented. The three major implant types are discussed: one-piece implant; two-piece implant with butt-joint interface; and two-piece implant with platform switching connection. This is a cutting edge lecture on the bone-implant relationship.
