Structured Assessment and Treatment Planning

Digital Implant Treatment Planning

German Gallucci

This lecture describes the evolution of digital technologies and related workflows in restorative and implant dentistry. The basis of the lecture is the clear advantage of treating the patient virtually before starting any interventions. The diagnosis and planning portions of a digital workflow are outlined in a step-by-step manner, beginning with the merging of a DICOM file from a cone beam CT scan with an STL file from an intraoral or extraoral scan. Based on the merged file, three types of prosthodontic planning are presented: the functional, digital, and dual scan methods. The lecture concludes with the presentation of a virtually planned case from start to finish.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • describe the background of the digital workflow
  • understand the possibilities of the digital workflow for implant placement and prosthetic reconstruction
  • recognize the limitations of current technology
