About the Scholarship Center

UB Implant Center faculty actively participate in ongoing research projects within the department, across interdepartmental teams, or internationally. ITI Scholars spending a year at UB Implant Center are strongly encouraged to engage in research projects in implant dentistry, dental materials, or digital dentistry. Mentoring by the UB Implant Center Director and faculty within the Implant Center or Department of Restorative Dentistry will be provided to guide the ITI Scholar throughout the scholarship year. The ITI Scholar will have the opportunity to receive guidance on participating in an ongoing or recently started project to ensure its completion before departure. As part of daily activities, scholars will be exposed to, but not limited to, observing clinical restorative and surgical procedures, participating in treatment planning sessions, digital workflows, laboratory procedures, CAD/CAM workflows with advanced additive and subtractive manufacturing technologies, and involvement in clinical research projects.

Clinical activities the ITI Scholar will participate in during the Scholarship year
Treatment planning sessions
Performing oral hygiene procedures and maintenance
Observing patient treatment
Assisting in patient treatment
Treating patients under faculty supervision: placing implants
Treating patients under faculty supervision: restoring implants
Treating patients alone: placing implants

Laboratory and procedures associated with treatment
Postgraduate education/specialization

Minimum three years of professional clinical experience as a qualified dentist required

Language requirements

Fluency in English required. TOEFL or IELTS certificate as proof of proficiency in English (for non-native English speakers) is required by the beginning of the ITI Scholarship year. Applicants are recommended to have a cumulative score of 80 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT) or 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.

Additional Information

The ITI Scholar at this center will participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning sessions with different specialty program residents in advanced education programs. Surgical preparation includes digital planning and manufacturing for the restorative and surgical steps with CAD/CAM workflow for the surgical and restorative steps, as well as observation of the treatment sequence, planning, and surgical preparation. During the treatment execution, scholars will have the opportunity to bridge the gap between planning, preparation for the treatment plan, and the execution of carefully planned treatment modalities of varying diagnostic planning will have the opportunity to bridge the gap between the diagnostic planning, preparation for the treatment plan and execution of carefully planned treatment modalities with different complexities.
During the scholarship period, the scholar will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects or be assigned different roles in clinical or non-clinical research projects. As the digital workflow is part of the daily routine in Buffalo ITI Scholarship Center, the scholar is expected to conduct at least 1 research project that leads to publication or be part of a research project that will be assigned and mentored during this time to gain research experiences, part of the ITI Scholarship experience.
ITI Scholar will have various opportunities to participate in implant courses in advanced education programs or teaching opportunities as a teaching assistant or course facilitator during the undergraduate level courses. During the scholarship time, ITI Scholar will have opportunities to participate in hands-on and didactic courses, literature review courses with different disciplines, as well as participate in 2 local ITI Study Clubs and national events within the region, such as section meeting, national congress, ITI Education Week.

Cost of living

We strongly advise you to consider cost of living (housing/rent, food, transportation, etc.) in the city of this ITI Scholarship Center, as certain destinations can be very expensive. It is essential to understand that the ITI scholarship stipend does not cover all living expenses but only contributes to these. Therefore, make sure you are fully aware of the cost of living in the city of this Scholarship Center if you consider applying for it. You must be prepared to co-finance the cost of living out of your own pocket. The ITI cannot provide additional funding during the scholarship year.
