About the Scholarship Center
The Complutense University of Madrid (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) is a public university located in Madrid, and it is one of the oldest universities in the world (dating from the 16th century). The university enrolls over 86,000 students each year and consistently ranks among the top universities in Spain.
The Department of Periodontology offers postgraduate studies and active research in the field. The postgraduate program focuses on the Specialization in Periodontology, a three-year, full-time course accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology to train specialists in periodontology and implant therapy. Research efforts are led by the Research Group ETEP (etiology and therapy of periodontal diseases), which operates six basic research laboratories and includes more than 12 postdoctoral researchers and over 10 PhD students. Key research areas include tissue regeneration, biofilm formation, and clinical trials related to periodontal and implant surgical procedures.
The University of Santiago de Compostela (Universidad de Santiago de Compostela) is a public university with a history of over five centuries. It is a historic institution that looks to the future and reaches beyond its borders, always attentive to society’s diverse needs. It stands as a key academic reference and continues to develop its academic and research work. Its long history gives the university a unique ability to combine experience, stability, and confidence with current and future challenges.
The Unit of Periodontology hosts postgraduate students in periodontics and active research. The postgraduate options are twofold. The Master of Periodontology is a three-year full-time program designed to train specialists in periodontology and implant therapy. Additionally, we offer a continuing education program in perio-implant dentistry, which consists of seven modules (12 hours each) held on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year. The research primarily focuses on the OMEQUI group (Odontología MEdico QUIrurgica/surgical and medical dentistry).

Activities during the Scholarship year
ITI Scholars may participate in patient treatment, but they cannot have patients assigned to them because they are not official students and are therefore not covered by the institution’s insurance policy. It is not permitted for any professional in Spain to work with patients without insurance coverage. However, they will participate in all kinds of clinical activities related to their assigned research and academic tasks. Both centers offer specialty postgraduate programs in periodontology and implant dentistry, and patients are treated under the supervision of these specialists in training. The ITI scholars will work together with them throughout all phases of the patient’s treatment.
Although scholars may initiate their own research projects, limited time makes it difficult, so they are usually assigned to participate in existing research projects.
At the University of Santiago de Compostela, the Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate)
