About the Scholarship Center

The Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery of the Muenster University Hospital is internationally acclaimed for excellence in clinical care, education and scientific research. The clinic covers the whole range of oral and maxillofacial surgery with special emphasis on orthognathic surgery, surgery of the TMJ, surgical treatment of OSA, traumatology, plastic reconstructive surgery, craniofacial malformations, oncology and tumor surgery, oral implantology, and aesthetic surgery.

The department offers various special consulting sessions for patients with oral and cranio-maxillofacial diseases including one for patients with rare diseases. Numerous surgical interventions are performed in inpatients and outpatients. The medical staff is committed to providing the highest level of patient care. The team plays a major role in interdepartmental collaborations that include orthodontics, prosthetic dentistry, periodontology and conservative dentistry, neurosurgery, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, pathology, human genetics, trauma and emergency surgery. In addition to the ITI program, we also offer a scholarship program from the International Bone Research Association (IBRA).

The main field of basic research is regenerative medicine in the oral and maxillofacial area with a focus on the vascular biology of oral structures. The department’s VABOS Research Group is an internationally renowned team working in the field of vascular pathology, imaging, cellular and molecular tissue regeneration, and therapeutic angiogenesis. The interdisciplinary team includes physicians, molecular biologists, biologists and physicists. Research is conducted in close cooperation with various institutes within Muenster University as well as with national and international groups working in this area. Other fields of research are bone regeneration, oral implants, oral cancer, diseases of the oral mucosa.

Besides educating dental and medical students and offering training in oral and maxillofacial Surgery (residency) as well as plastic surgery, the department offers continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Activities during the Scholarship year

Clinical activities the ITI Scholar will participate in during the Scholarship year
Treatment planning sessions
Performing oral hygiene procedures and maintenance
Observing patient treatment
Assisting in patient treatment
Treating patients under faculty supervision: placing implants

Additional information on the clinical activities

Scholars are welcome to participate in all the department’s activities. They get insight into the treatment of outpatients and inpatients, ward work and join the surgeons in the OR. For insurance reasons, Scholars are not allowed to treat patients. Active involvement in research is desirable. Scholars may participate in all educational courses. The training program will be individually arranged with the candidate.

Min. three years of professional clinical experience as a qualified dentist required

Mentors will be assigned to the Scholar according to their research preference

Language requirements

TOEFL or IELTS certificate as proof of proficiency in English (for non-native English speakers) required by the beginning of the ITI Scholarship year: B2 on the internet-Based TOEFL (iBT) or 5 overall band score on the IELTS.
Basic language skills in German are an advantage. The lectures, classes and/or courses the Scholar can attend will be held in German.

Cost of living

We strongly advise you to consider cost of living (housing/rent, food, transportation, etc.) in the city of this ITI Scholarship Center, as certain destinations can be very expensive. It is essential to understand that the ITI scholarship stipend does not cover all living expenses but only contributes to these. Therefore, make sure you are fully aware of the cost of living in the city of this Scholarship Center if you consider applying for it. You must be prepared to co-finance the cost of living out of your own pocket. The ITI cannot provide additional funding during the scholarship year.
