Johannes Gutenberg University Medical Center
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
About the Scholarship Center
Mainz is located in the center of Germany close to Frankfurt Airport. The University Medical Center has 1,500 beds and treats more than 350,000 patients each year. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery treats more than 1,500 patients in-house and 10,000 outpatients annually and is located inside the Dental School with more than 600 dental students. It offers the full range of treatment in this specialist area for both out- and inpatients (dental implantology, dental surgery, traumatology, treatment of malformations, oncology). Clinical and scientific expertise in the field of implant dentistry has been part of our daily work for more than 30 years, with more than 1,000 implants placed annually. Patients often require the full spectrum of orofacial rehabilitation. This ranges from tumor or cleft palate rehabilitation in conjunction with major osteoplastic procedures (conventional, microvascular and distraction techniques) to esthetically challenging single-tooth replacements. All rehabilitation concepts are planned and carried out in close cooperation with the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry (Prof. Dr. Abou-Ayash). Digital workflow facilities (including a 3D printer) are routinely used in cooperation with the prosthodontic department. Basic research is performed in our histologic and cell laboratory in the field of bone substitutes and biomaterial-cell interaction. Questions relating to microscopy and analysis are tackled in cooperation with the BiomaTiCS university focus program. We are also involved in clinical research including animal models and clinical trials according to GCP. The university offers an international Master in Personalised Implantology and Periodontology, as well as an MD-PhD program (TransMed).

Activities during the Scholarship year
Activities during the Scholarship Year
Standard vaccinations are required for observing and assisting in patient treatment. Treatment of patients is not possible without a Dental License issued in a EU country and an employment contract as only employees of the university are allowed to treat patients.
Scholars in our department are encouraged to participate in every phase of surgical therapy and are welcome to attend interdisciplinary consultations. An interest in the full spectrum of dental and maxillofacial surgery is desirable and ITI Scholars are invited to join the teams of surgeons in the operating theater. For insurance reasons ITI Scholars are not normally able to treat their own patients. They are encouraged to participate in all continuing education courses organized by our department. We expect our ITI Scholars to be involved in research projects as co-investigators or to start their own projects with the team. A PhD option in Translational Biomedicine is available for highly motivated Scholars who fulfill the specific requirements (https://www.unimedizin-mainz.de/transmed/home.html).
During the scholarship year, the Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate)
To take full clinical and scientific advantage of the Scholarship year, ITI Scholars are encouraged to have some knowledge of German. For those with a more scientifically based focus we are also happy with English. It is our clear aim to maintain contact with our ITI Scholars after they leave.
We strongly advise you to consider cost of living (housing/rent, food, transportation, etc.) in the city of this ITI Scholarship Center, as certain destinations can be very expensive. It is essential to understand that the ITI scholarship stipend does not cover all living expenses but only contributes to these. Therefore, make sure you are fully aware of the cost of living in the city of this Scholarship Center if you consider applying for it. You must be prepared to co-finance the cost of living out of your own pocket. The ITI cannot provide additional funding during the scholarship year.
