Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry
About the Scholarship Center
The Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry has over 30 years of experience in implant therapy, including the placement of implants in conjunction with bone and/or soft tissue augmentation, as well as their restoration with implant-supported fixed and removable prostheses. The majority of patients treated at the clinic are partially edentulous and receive comprehensive care across all disciplines of dental medicine, delivered by both faculty members and postgraduate students.
In most of the cases treated at this specialist clinic, implant placement is combined with augmentation procedures, utilizing guided bone regeneration (GBR) techniques as well as soft tissue augmentation procedures. The use of both autologous and substitute biomaterials ensure optimal hard and soft tissue outcomes. The clinic places strong emphasis on meticulous treatment planning and precise clinical execution, aiming to achieve outcomes that are both biologically sound and esthetically optimal.
The clinical and research portfolio is centered on reconstructive and prosthetic dentistry, oral implantology and regenerative therapies, as well as advanced digital dentistry, including navigated and robotic approaches, and dental e-health and diagnostics. Its research activities encompass bone and soft tissue regeneration, implant integration and loading protocols, as well as conventional and full-ceramic reconstructions and minimally invasive treatment concepts embedded in comprehensive digital workflows. A particular hallmark of the clinic’s research is its strong commitment to patient-centered outcomes and shared decision-making, reflecting a translational approach that bridges technological innovation with individualized patient care (Prof. Dr. Ronald Jung, PhD; Prof. Dr. Daniel Thoma; Prof. Dr. Tim Joda; PD Dr. Nadja Nänni; Dr. Marc Balmer; Dr. Elena Mühlemann; Dr. Pune Paqué; Dr. Roman Schellenberg; Dr. Kevser Pala).
The Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry of the University of Zürich offers both undergraduate education and a structured 3-year full-time postgraduate program as well as a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Oral Implantology. The clinical focus lies in the treatment of complex and esthetically challenging cases using all aspects of reconstructive, regenerative and implant dentistry. In addition, the interdisciplinary team for periimplantitis (IPS) at the Center of Dental Medicine focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of peri-implant diseases runs under the leadership of the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry.
The Scholars have access to all clinic-related activities. These include lectures, practical trainings, synoptic student courses, seminar programs, literature discussions, hands-on workshops as well as attending courses of continuing education and national as well as international congresses.

Activities during the Scholarship year
ITI Scholars cannot treat patients independently. Swiss regulations and licenses are not feasible to obtain for a one-years scholarship (short stay).
Scholars have the opportunity to observe and participate in laboratory procedures, with full access to in-house laboratories. All clinical, laboratory, educational, and research activities are open for observation. In addition, scholars are actively involved in the daily operations of the clinic, gaining comprehensive clinical experience.
ITI Scholars at our clinic are able to learn about every phase of therapy using dental implants, including treatment planning, execution of preparatory, surgical and prosthetic steps as well as follow-up therapy. They take part in weekly treatment planning sessions, literature discussions and seminars. There is also a monthly journal club meeting that includes all the journals that are relevant in the field of implant and reconstructive dentistry. ITI Scholars can observe and assist in surgical and restorative procedures on a daily basis, experiencing each step of a comprehensive therapy from the initial examination to the surgical phase until the final reconstruction. ITI Scholars cannot treat patients independently.
ITI Scholars are further involved in the clinic’s continuing education courses on surgical and prosthetic topics related to implant dentistry. Research activities as co-investigators in the above-mentioned fields are encouraged.
Scholars are added to the Topic List of ITI Study Clubs in Switzerland and can be invited as speakers by the respective Study Club Directors.
