Introduction to Implant Dentistry

Tooth Regeneration and Repair

Paul Sharpe

The concept of replacing a missing tooth with a natural tooth made from stem cells rather than a metallic implant was first suggested over 10 years ago. Despite the establishment of “proof of concept” for this procedure, it is not yet possible to consider this as an approach that can be tested clinically on patients. This lecture provides an overview of the progress being made in this field, with an update on the current understanding of what will be required in order to translate this concept into a clinical setting.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • outline progress made towards creating a natural tooth from stem cells
  • understand the biology behind regenerative dentistry in relation to stem cell research
  • recognize the obstacles being faced in tooth tissue engineering
