Screw-Retained versus Cemented Prosthesis: Where Do We Stand?

Alain Abi Sleiman

This presentation explains the advantages and disadvantages of cemented versus screw-retained prostheses. The lecture concentrates on three aspects: the retrievability of the prostheses and the biological issues associated with excess cement; the retention and resistance of crowns and fixed dental prostheses regarding the abutment height, degree of taper, surface area, and roughness; and finally the esthetics of cemented versus screw-retained superstructures. His conclusion is that both types of fixation influence the clinical outcome, with cemented prostheses having more biological complications and screw-retained prostheses having more technical problems.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • explain differences in retrievability of screw- vs. cement-retained prostheses
  • discuss retention and resistance of screw- vs. cement-retained prostheses
  • discuss esthetics of screw- vs. cement-retained prostheses
