Prosthetic Planning and Design to Prevent Hardware Complications

Hans-Peter Weber

Hardware complications are unavoidable for anyone who is practicing implant dentistry. These complications can be mechanical, such as failure of prefabricated components, or technical, such as failure of a laboratory-fabricated suprastructure or its materials. This lecture presents the importance of keeping the causes of hardware complications in mind while planning the prosthesis design. Also, because complication rates are not the same for every treatment option and material, the clinician should select the abutment and overall materials according to the treatment indications, reserving ceramics for esthetically demanding cases. Finally, this lecture presents the potential limitations of third-party products.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • understand causes of mechanical and technical complications for implant-supported prostheses
  • describe complication rates for removable and fixed prostheses
  • discuss clinical recommendations to avoid technical and biological complications
  • perform indication-specific abutment selection for fixed prostheses in terms of material and custom design
