Treatment Outcomes and Continuing Care

Lifelong Maintenance of Dental Implants

Mario Roccuzzo

Recent studies have shown that the real number of implants free from complications is much lower than expected. At the same time many commercially driven health clinics around the world offer one-day treatment with the promise of lifelong, fully functioning teeth. The conflicting demands (to extract or not to extract teeth) are played out in the care provided, with much confusion among both patients and dentists. Even though no definitive answer can be given, it should be clear by now that periodontally compromised patients (PCPs) must be informed that they are at higher risk of peri-implant disease before treatment is initiated. This lecture clearly communicates how long-term success starts with correct implant positioning in adequate supporting bone, along with an effective soft-tissue barrier capable of biologically protecting the peri-implant structures. Nevertheless, periodontally compromised patients, despite optimal plaque control, may need further therapy to limit the nature and extent of biological complications throughout their lifetime.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • understand the importance of both correct implant placement and excellent patient compliance as prerequisites for long-term success
  • select the proper augmentation procedures in the different situations where needed
  • introduce an appropriate supportive periodontal therapy program in the clinical practice to enhance long-term implant results, especially in periodontally compromised patients (PCP)
