2-Dimensional Radiography in Implant Dentistry – What is its Current Role?

Michael M. Bornstein

In implant dentistry, diagnostic imaging serves two main purposes: to establish a diagnosis and to aid in surgical treatment planning. This lecture provides a brief overview of the role of diagnostic radiography as well as the available options for two-dimensional imaging. Next, the use of 2D imaging for implant treatment planning is covered in detail using a case example. Finally, the lecturer shows how 2D imaging is the appropriate technique to confirm the position of an implant in relation to anatomical boundaries as well as for follow-up in most clinical situations.

At the end of this Congress Lecture you should be able to…

  • explain the purpose of diagnostic imaging in implant dentistry
  • list the available modalities for 2D imaging
  • describe the use of 2D imaging for dental implant treatment planning
  • describe the use of 2D imaging during and after dental implant placement
