Esthetic Implant Dentistry: Contemporary Prosthodontic and Surgical Techniques for Sustainable Results

This course will cover implant dentistry in the Straightforward and Advanced categories of the SAC classification, both in terms of theory, live cases and hands-on.

Participants will train on phantom heads to simulate the oral environment as closely as possible. Surgical soft tissue management will be presented through demonstrations and hands-on training. Surgical hands-on training will cover implant placement, flap design, suture techniques and soft tissue grafting procedures. Hands-on management of minor hard- and soft-tissue defects will be covered using particulate grafting material and resorbable membranes. Prosthodontic principles of esthetic implant dentistry will be covered in detail, including principles of occlusion, bite registration, CAD-CAM prostheses and technical aspects of laboratory work. Hands-on prosthodontic training will include impression-taking, provisional prostheses and live demonstration of cases.

Participants will be tutored in detail on the pathogenesis of peri-implant and periodontal diseases, their treatment and supportive therapy. Cases will be work-shopped to give delegates first-hand experience of managing such patients. The fee for this Education Week will include the following:

Three days of hands-on training and live cases, followed by two days of ITI Congress presented by the South African Section- with international speakers Prof Will Martin (USA) and Prof Stephen Chen (Australia).

Learning Objectives

At the end of this Education Week, participants will be able to:

  • Diagnose, classify and manage periodontal and peri-implant disease
  • Draw up a treatment plan for the replacement of lost teeth in the anterior maxilla (esthetic zone)
  • Place an implant correctly in the anterior maxilla, take impressions and manufacture provisional crowns and bridges on implants in the esthetic zone.
  • Use different suturing techniques for soft-tissue management
  • Manage minor hard- and soft-tissue defects using particulate grafting and resorbable membranes


  • Diagnosis, classification and management of periodontal/ peri-implant disease
  • Dento-facial esthetics
  • Treatment planning: the single missing and multiple missing teeth in the anterior maxilla
  • Computed tomography and related software in implant planning
  • Risk assessment from an anatomic and surgical point of view
  • Extraction technique and post-extraction ridge alterations in the esthetic zone
  • Correct 3D implant placement in esthetic sites
  • Post-extraction implant placement with simultaneous contour augmentation: when and how?
  • Surgical handling of esthetic complications and failures
  • Assessment of treatment difficulty and risk to outcomes in the esthetic zone
  • Prosthodontics management of peri-implant tissues – prior and subsequent to  implant placement
  • Provisional restorations for esthetic cases
  • Demystifying abutment, restorative materials and morphology in implant dentistry
  • Digital planning and prosthodontics in implant dentistry – from planning placement to prosthodontics
  • Avoiding and managing prosthodontic and surgical complications in implant dentistry
