Activities during the Scholarship year
ITI Scholars will need to obtain a Massachusetts limited license. All applications for Limited Licenses need to be approved by HSDM before beginning the application process. Find details here: https://www.mass.gov/how-to/apply-for-a-limited-dental-intern-license
In the Harvard Faculty Practice, ITI Scholars are involved in assisting in patient care, i.e. primarily comprehensive implant dentistry, including treatment planning, surgical placement and restoration of dental implants. Additionally, clinical teaching of predoctoral students for at least one day per week is part of the program. ITI Scholars also have access to lectures and interdisciplinary seminars offered in HSDM's advanced graduate specialty programs.
Involvement in research or other scholarly activities is recommended and available on an ad hoc basis.
During the scholarship year, the Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate)
The state of Massachusetts requires a TOEFL or IELTS certificate as proof of proficiency in English (for non-native-English Speakers) by the beginning of the ITI Scholarship program. This will allow the ITI Scholar to obtain a limited license, which is issued by the Board of Registration in Dentistry in Massachusetts. The limited license is necessary to participate in clinical activities. The language certificate must be valid (no older than two years) at the time of application for the limited license. The ITI Scholar is responsible for organizing and providing the required language certificate. For more information regarding the language certificate in connection with the limited license please contact the Board of Registration. Find more information here.
ITI Scholars must provide proof of funding to HSDM that meets or exceeds HSDM’s non-paid visiting scholars self-funding minimum requirements, prior to arrival which for 2026 is USD 72,000, along with sufficient medical insurance to avoid financial hardship during their stay. Only doctors who can provide proof of funding (excluding ITI) can apply for HSDM. For full details on Harvard’s J-1 visa sponsorship requirements, please consult the Harvard University Website
We strongly advise you to consider cost of living (housing/rent, food, transportation, etc.) in the city of this ITI Scholarship Center, as certain destinations can be very expensive. It is essential to understand that the ITI scholarship stipend does not cover all living expenses but only contributes to these. Therefore, make sure you are fully aware of the cost of living in the city of this Scholarship Center if you consider applying for it. You must be prepared to co-finance the cost of living out of your own pocket. The ITI cannot provide additional funding during the scholarship year.
