About the Scholarship Center
The ITI Scholarship program offers an exceptional learning experience designed for those who are passionate about advancing their expertise in reconstructive dentistry and gerodontology. This center offers scholars the opportunity to expand their knowledge across the full spectrum of oral rehabilitation: from digital workflows and CAD/CAM technologies to the management of partially and completely edentulous patients, addressing fixed and removable scenarios with and without implant support. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based treatment planning, prosthetic material science, and the unique functional and aesthetic demands of the patient. The Department of Reconstructive Dentistry and Gerodontology is furthermore very strong in treating maxilla-facial trauma and tumor cases – together with the University Hospital (surgical part) the full spectrum of patients, including zygomatic implants and personalized implants, are rehabilitated. There is an important focus on oro-facial pain treatment and with the Laboratory for Dental Digital Technologies a strong research focus on pre-clinical digital studies, including Zirconia printing. The program is thoughtfully structured and can be adapted to the wishes of the scholar – either more research focused (pre-clinical) or clinically focused, Scholars will have the opportunity to engage directly in treatment planning, assist in both simple and complex treatment, and immerse themselves in innovative research, with potential for publication in leading journals. If research is focused, there is the possibility to obtain the degree Dr. med. dent. (Univ. Bern).
Although ITI Scholars are not involved in direct patient treatment by themself, they play an essential role in supporting experienced clinicians and residents, as well as gaining invaluable insights into clinical practice.
Scholars will have access to world-class educational opportunities. Notable offerings include the ITI Education Week and other Continuing Education (CE) courses. This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with leading surgeons, participate in research, and refine your skills in a dynamic, supportive environment. By joining this program, ITI Scholars gain unparalleled exposure to advanced techniques, innovative treatments, and pioneering studies, setting the stage for a successful and impactful career.

Activities during the Scholarship year
German level B1, Swiss or European Union dental diploma
The Laboratory for Dental Digital Technologies, jointly operated with the Department of Preventive, Restorative and Pediatric Dentistry, offers scholars a state-of-the-art pre-clinical research environment. Research activities center on five main areas: (1) evaluation of digital technologies for diagnosis and treatment planning, including intraoral scanning/industrial grade scanning and AI-assisted workflows; (2) accuracy testing of CAD-CAM systems including milling machines and dental 3D printers — the lab operates a broad fleet of vat photopolymerization printers (SLA, DLP and LCD) enabling comparative studies on resin and zirconia printing; (3) the physical, optical, and mechanical testing of CAD-CAM prostheses, from minimally invasive small-size restorations to complete-arch tooth-/implant-supported frameworks, manufactured through digital technologies; (4) investigation of emerging digital dental technologies and their clinical applicability, including digital denture design, implant-retained prostheses, and personalized titanium frameworks developed in collaboration with the Swiss m4m Center; (5) and the use of digital tools to enhance dental education. Scholars integrated into this laboratory will contribute to ongoing in vitro and pre-clinical studies, participate in study design, data acquisition and statistical analysis, and will be encouraged to submit findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Close collaboration with the clinical teams ensures that bench research is continuously translated into patient-relevant outcomes.
During the scholarship year, the Scholar's time will be allocated to the activities below as follows (estimate)
But may be more research oriented, depending on the goals of the scholar.
Fluency in English is required. Basic language skills in German or Spanish are an advantage.
Lectures and courses are primarily conducted in German, though English is also used for some sessions and will be adapted for the scholar.
German level B1 is required for participation in clinical activities.
ITI Scholars will have the opportunity to take part in all implant therapy related CE courses offered by the School of Dental Medicine including the ITI Education Week and Master Courses on bone grafting and in esthetic implant dentistry. ITI Scholars are invited to get involved with a research project resulting in a publication.
Important: for acquiring the visa documents, paperwork must be submitted at least 3 months prior to the start of the scholarship. The University of Bern will support the visa process.
