The year 2020 moves into its 11th month and the coronavirus pandemic continues to pose immense challenges and hardship worldwide. There is definite progress, however, within the areas of developing vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, identifying effective drugs to treat COVID-19 and improving the types and turnaround times of testing for the virus.
In this update, we feature three items:

- The second reports on the use and potential advantages of testing for SARS-CoV-2 by saliva samples collected by the patients themselves.
- The third offers the positive news for dentistry that current infection control recommendations appear to be sufficient for preventing transmission in dental settings.
