Scholarship Center

Tsurumi University Dental School, Yokohama, Japan

The division of oral & maxillofacial implant dentistry was established at the Tsurumi University Dental School Hospital in September 2001 and approved as a Scholarship Center in July 2002. At present, the staff of this clinical division includes an associate professor of oral & maxillofacial surgery as section head, three assistant lecturers in prosthodontics, one specialist in periodontal surgery, two graduate students, five junior assistants and 70 specialized clinical course residents who are training to qualify for board certification by the Japanese Society for Oral Implantology.

On average we perform surgery on around 400 cases each year involving implants, sinus lifts & bone grafts, bone grafts, and osteogenic distractions. Similarly in one year, our Oral and Maxillofacial Implantology division used 804 implants which included ITI - 452 implants (about 56%), Nobel Biocare - 327 (41%) and GC- 2 (3%). In addition, we also performed treatments that included 32 immediate provisional implants (10 cases), skeletal anchorage system, 14 implants (5 cases) and 4 facial implants (1 case).

ITI scholars will have ample opportunity for training in implant dentistry using excellent facilities and working closely with the staff of the implant dentistry division of Tsurumi University. The characteristic feature of our division is that implant treatment is closely integrated with oral & maxillofacial reconstruction & rehabilitation after surgery. This management strategy was implemented in our dental hospital thanks to a number of excellent preconditions such as the high level of oral & maxillofacial surgery, dental anesthesia, a high standard of dental technology and the availability of internal medicine facilities. In short, ITI scholars will be exposed not only to treatment using oral & maxillofacial implants but to overall management including the appropriate training in surgery, prosthodontics, periodontology and related dental technology as well as in-patient management. Professor Arai, Head of Periodontal Surgery at Tsurumi University also plays a vital role in clinical training & education for implant dentistry and he currently holds positions on the board of directors of the Japanese Society of Implant Dentistry, the Japanese Society of Periodontology and is also Deputy Director of Tsurumi university dental school hospital.

The division of implant dentistry at Tsurumi University has been recognized by the Japanese Society for Implant Dentistry as a training center for candidates aiming for board certification in implant dentistry. Those who complete 5 years of training at this center and fulfill the society’s requirements will be awarded board certification as specialists.
