The School of Dentistry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) has a long-standing commitment to patient care, teaching and research in implant dentistry. The Department of Periodontology within the School of Dentistry offers a one-year International Training Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Implants in cooperation with the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Radiology. Trainees for the one-year program have to date been supported by the ITI Scholars Program through the ITI Foundation.

Two different training tracks are offered to a Scholar, based on the Scholar’s visa as well as the training track deemed appropriate by the Scholar and program supervisors.

Track 1. This track is “observe only”. The trainee must have a J-1 visa prior to beginning the program. Throughout the one-year period, the trainee participates in all patient care situations as an observer, attends courses and seminars in implant dentistry including CE courses, and engages in a research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor. There is no tuition charge for this training track.

Track 2. This track is similar to the one above but is more formal and includes “hands-on” training in the form of treatment of patients in a variety of situations. The Scholar must apply formally to the University, must have an F-1 visa, must obtain an Intern License from the state of North Carolina and must also pay a tuition charge of $30,000 for the year.

Both training schemes award Scholars a certificate of completion.

The ITI Scholarship Committee normally identifies a trainee/Scholar for UNC who will receive support. The Program Director, Dr. Nadine Brodala then discusses which training track is preferred with the scholar. If the ITI Scholar chooses Track 2, he or she must come for an interview prior to acceptance by the University.
