The University of Texas Health Science Center,
Dental School, San Antonio, Texas, USA Department of Periodontics

The Department of Periodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) is one of 10 departments in the Dental School and comprises 3 divisions, Predoctoral, Specialist Postdoctoral or Graduate, and Research. The Research Division includes basic and applied research involving basic laboratory science, animal experimentation and human clinical trials. There are approximately 95 Predoctoral Students in each of the four years of the dental curriculum. The internationally renowned (Specialist) Graduate Division has approximately 4-5 Postdoctoral Students in each year of its three-year curriculum. The Department has an important association with the United States Air Force Periodontal Training Program. USAF Postdoctoral Students participate in the Department’s graduate training program and obtain a Master’s degree after completing the requirements of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences along with our Health Science Center periodontal graduate students.

ITI Scholars are expected to participate in ongoing studies in the Department and focus specifically on an aspect of dental implants or in the area of biologics. During the one-year curriculum, the ITI Scholar is expected to complete a project that results in the submission of a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal. In addition, the ITI scholar is able to observe and assist in graduate implant cases including diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical, restorative procedures and follow-up care. The scholar is encouraged to attend didactic courses, seminars and lectures related to dental implants in the Department and the Dental School. Individual ongoing patient care is not permitted. Participation in a regional or national meeting on implants is encouraged. Our overall goal is for the ITI Scholar to enhance his/her knowledge of dental implants in general, the Straumann implant system and the ITI philosophy in particular. It is hoped that the ITI Scholar will leave with new tools, ideas and knowledge that he/she can use in subsequent years of their professional career.
