Scholarship Center

Eastman Dental Institute, UCL, London, U.K.
Department of Periodontology

The department of periodontology is involved in the surgical treatment of patients with dental implants as part of the post-graduate curriculum for students of periodontology (M.Clin. Dent. in Periodontics & Special Registrar in Restorative Dentistry) as well in the treatment of national health insurance patients by staff members. Approximately 300 dental implants are placed each year and this number is growing.

The patients treated are either partially edentulous or are in need of single tooth replacement and have often already been treated for periodontal disease. Due to the compromised amount of alveolar bone in these cases, bone augmentation techniques are often used. Strong emphasis is placed on the handling of soft tissues, where esthetics may be compromised.

The Scholar should have qualifications in periodontology and his/her research interests/experience should be in line with the research priorities of the department of periodontology.

For a number of reasons we are not able to provide Scholars with a customized training program, but they are expected to participate in the didactic parts of the implant dentistry components of our MClinDent program in Periodontology. These include the theoretical aspects (lectures, literature seminars, tutorials, case presentations) of implant-associated subjects as well as the basic surgical, prosthodontic and bone augmentation workshops. The Scholar should also follow all the lectures offered by visiting professors/lecturers that take place during the academic year.

The Scholar is exposed to a wide range of implant dentistry clinics but as a matter of policy should not expect to be allocated cases for direct treatment under staff supervision. The Scholar is encouraged to participate in every phase of surgical therapy, which includes treatment planning and assisting during implant surgeries. Should a Scholar fulfill the formal requirements needed for registration with the appropriate UK authorities and is deemed to be competent enough, cases may be allocated on an ad hoc basis, depending on experience and availability.

Another significant component of the Scholarship is active participation in a research project that is related to research in the field of implant dentistry. A Scholar’s time is split between theoretical study, clinical mentoring and research. The actual time allocated to each component is individually determined with the successful candidate.
