School of Dental Medicine, University of Berne, Switzerland,
Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics

The Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics at the University of Berne, Switzerland started placing implants in 1987. Each year approximately 400 new patients in need of reconstructions are admitted to the department. Emphasis is placed on comprehensive treatment planning involving oral implants to reestablish satisfactory esthetics and functioning under healthy conditions for the partially edentulous patient. Treatment planning is given a special priority in the post-doctoral curriculum and specialist education. Reconstruction is also carried out on younger patients with either cleft lip, alveolus and palate, agenesis of teeth or other hereditary abnormalities in the hard tissues of the teeth.

ITI Scholars are invited to attend all the educational and academic events of the structured three-year graduate programs that usually lead to specialization in either Periodontology or Reconstructive Dentistry. These programs are accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the Swiss Federal Health Authorities. The one-year scholarship can only offer approximately 50 percent of the theoretical background of one of the two programs mentioned.

The ITI scholar will have only limited exposure to patient care, and this will depend on the previous clinical exposure and skills of the scholar prior to his/her arrival at Berne. Nevertheless, the scholar will be exposed to numerous clinical and treatment planning sessions, both in implant installation as well as prosthetic reconstruction of implants.

ITI Scholars will participate in at least two one-week continuing education courses offered by the departmental staff and in collaboration with the Department of Oral Surgery (Professor Buser) and the University of Geneva (Professor Belser).

The Department also offers Scholars the opportunity to get actively involved in one of the numerous ongoing research projects or to start a new project in collaboration with the faculty of the department. The following members of the faculty are involved in the department’s educational and training program:
Professor Dr. Dr.hc Niklaus P. Lang, Professor Dr. Urs Brägger, Professor Dr. G.Rutger Persson, PD Dr. Giovanni Salvi, PD Dr. Dieter D. Bosshardt, Dr. Bjarni E. Pjetursson (former ITI Scholar).

Research avenues include:
Wound healing and establishment of osseointegration and the periimplant soft tissue seal Etiology and pathogenesis, prevention and therapy of periimplant infections Oral microbiology in homeostasis and pathology as well as during therapeutical protocols. Clinical research in diagnostic procedures, evaluation of risk factors and antimicrobial therapy Quantitative radiology in the assessment of treatment outcomes
