Dental School, University of Berne, Switzerland
Department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology

The department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology at the University of Berne has been involved with implant dentistry for 20 years and treats more than 400 implant patients each year with approximately 650-700 implants. Most of the patients are partially edentulous (>90 percent) presenting either with single tooth gaps, distal extension situations or extended edentulous spaces. Approximately 40 percent of implants can only be placed when in conjunction with bone augmentation procedures, using either the GBR technique or sinus grafting. As a result, these augmentation procedures are part of daily practice. As well as our activities in implant dentistry, our Department is also involved in oral surgery in general, dental traumatology and endodontic surgery (Dr Thomas von Arx), dental radiology (Dr. Karl Dula), and stomatology (Dr. Michael Bornstein).

ITI Scholars at our Department participate in every phase of surgical therapy with treatment planning, implant surgeries and post-surgical care. They spend a lot of time in the operating theater assisting our surgeons, but for various reasons, however, they are not authorized to treat their own patients. They may also participate in continuing education courses including master courses in esthetic implant dentistry (with Professor Urs C. Belser) and bone augmentation procedures (with Professor Robert K. Schenk). We expect our ITI Scholars to get involved in research projects as co-investigators mainly in the field of bone regeneration, surface technology and bone grafts, and bone substitutes.
