Scholarship Center

University of Geneva, School of Dental Medicine, Switzerland

The ITI Scholarship program at the University of Geneva is a joint venture between the Department of Prosthodontics (Dr. Urs Belser) and the Department of Stomatology and Oral Surgery (Dr. Jean-Pierre Bernard). Our institution has been involved in implant dentistry since 1988, and more than 5500 implants have been inserted in both partially edentulous and edentulous patients, and documented as part of a multicenter study. The scholarship program comprises the following elements:

Access to all didactic programs (lectures, seminars, practical/clinical courses) offered by the two departments at an undergraduate level, as well as to any continuing education courses/programs organized
Weekly multidisciplinary implant consultations
Weekly literature seminars/reviews
Weekly treatment planning seminars/case presentations/discussions
Comprehensive treatment of selected implant patients (under supervision), including treatment planning, preparation of surgical interventions, actual implant placement (initially as an assistant, later with assistance of an experienced surgeon) as well as the accompanying step-by-step prosthetic rehabilitation
Participation in ongoing implant-related research projects of the two departments
Participation in the Straumann Education Week, organized once a year at the University of Berne (Speakers: Dr. Daniel Buser, Dr. Niklaus Lang, Dr. Urs Belser et al.), and tour of the Straumann production plant in Villeret (Switzerland)

On completion of this one-year program, the participants should have acquired solid theoretical and practical skills in the field of implant dentistry in general, and in treating patients with ITI dental implants in particular. They should – once back in their country of origin – be in a position to implement the structured use of dental implants in their own practice, and/or serve as junior Speakers/clinical instructors in “spreading ITI science and philosophy” and in doing so contribute to the worldwide advancement and evolution of implant dentistry.

Important: Authorization for “independent” implant surgery and comprehensive treatment of implant patients of varying degrees of complexity will depend on the professional and personal competencies of the individual ITI Scholar, which will be assessed during the initial period of the ITI Scholarship program.

The University of Geneva belongs to the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Ideally, candidates should be able to speak fluent French as this will significantly facilitate communication with patients. For candidates who do not have French, fluent English is a prerequisite for application.
