1 May 2010

ITI World Symposium. Geneva, 15-17 April 2010

With 4,000 people from 90 countries registered, the ITI World Symposium 2010 was the one of the biggest events in the implant dentistry calendar. The 2010 Symposium coincides with 30th birthday of the ITI, and the motto of the Symposium reflects this history: ‘30 years of leadership and credibility.‘ Geneva, Switzerland provided a picturesque backdrop to a 3 full days program of topical presentations and debate.

A pre-symposium program consisted of two, parallel full-day courses complemented the main program on the 14th April. The topics were “Soft tissue management and conditioning around implants in the esthetic zone”, and “Bone grafting for implant site development.” The traditional and highly popular Limited Attendance Sessions were also expanded from three to four compact lectures per session dealing in detail with different aspects of a selected topic.

The ITI's mission: "to promote and disseminate knowledge on all aspects of implant dentistry and related tissue regeneration" were held true with faculty consisted of 113 experts from 26 countries and trade exhibition that drew 38 exhibitors from Europe as well as the USA. A Scientific Poster competition was fierce, with a total of 118 posters competing for 5 award categories.

The main program was held in the “ITI Town Hall” where all the presentations were simultaneously translated in 12 languages.

During the symposium, several key ITI initiative were launched, of which Australian fellows and members played a key role in their development:

1. SAC Assessment Tool, an innovative online service for the dental community. This service is provided free of charge on the ITI website www.iti.org. This interactive tool allows dental practitioners to assess the degree of complexity and risks involved in implant therapy cases. The direct link can be found here.

2. ITI online platform "ITInet". Available to all 8'000 Members and Fellows worldwide. Fellows and Members worldwide will now have opportunity to have interactive discussion with colleagues within each section, and around the world. Using your e-mail address and your existing Knowledge Network password, log on to the ITInet today via the ITI website at www.iti.org.

The social program was alive and well during the symposium. The Straumann AU/NZ dinner event for the Australasian contingent was held on 15th April at the lovely Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva on the shores of the Lake Geneva. The dinner was topped off with a special visit by the Friedrich Buck, Executive Director of the ITI, Professor Daniel Buser, ITI President and Straumann’s newly appointed President & CEO, Beat Spalinger.

Straumann also sponsored the official Symposium “White Night Party” held at the ITI Village on Friday, 16th April.

By the end of the Symposium, many of us feel refreshed with the information from the well-balanced, clinically oriented scientific program and enjoyed the network of friends and colleagues that is essentially “ITI”. With extra help from Eyjafjallajoekull volcanic eruption, many of the participants have the opportunity to enjoy the Swiss hospitality further throughout Switzerland and beyond.
