About the Scholarship Center
The former Tokyo National School of Dentistry was founded by the Japanese Government in 1928 as the first national dental school and became a university in 1951 after the medical school started in 1944. The department of Oral Implantology and Regenerative Dental Medicine was established in 2004. Staff and postgraduate students of the department treat patients with dental implants in the dental implant clinic of the TMDU Dental Hospital, which is the largest dental hospital in Japan. More than 1,500 implants are placed in this clinic every year and there are variety of cases: simple and complicated cases including problems with dental implants and cases requiring soft tissue management and/or bone augmentation. The clinic has been recognized as an educational center of implant dentistry by Japanese Society of Oral Implantology and the Japanese Academy of Maxillofacial Implants.

Special requirements for this Scholarship Center
We are currently conducting research on (1) materials of dental implants and prostheses, (2) examination and prevention of implantitis and (3) regeneration of soft and hard tissues. Thus, it is preferable that the ITI Scholar has an interest in these areas of research.
Since more than half of the postgraduate students in the department are from other countries, the seminars in the department are in English. The ITI Scholar should be fluent in English. Although the atmosphere of the department is very international, it is desirable that the ITI Scholar has some basic Japanese.
