About the Scholarship Center
The University of Pretoria Scholarship Center program is housed in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the Pretoria Oral and Dental Hospital, which is also an ITI Center of Excellence. ITI Scholars will have the opportunity to spend time in the clinics at the School of Dentistry as well as selected private clinics. The members of the ITI Scholarship Faculty at Pretoria include some of the most experienced implant surgeons and prosthodontists in South Africa, including academics and private specialists. The dental implant treatment philosophy followed is one of multidisciplinary care through close collaboration between the disciplines of periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. There is close collaboration between the Dental Hospital and the private sector, which exposes Scholars to the best of both worlds.

Special requirements for this Scholarship Center
All ITI Scholars will be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in the Education category, which will allow them to work in the academic hospital. The right to provide the full range of supervised treatment and care to the patients, including surgical and prosthodontic care, is regulated by the HPCSA and will be supported by the department after evaluation of each candidate’s CV. Once accepted by the ITI with proof of funding, the successful ITI Scholar must apply for an appropriate visa for South Africa. For further information in regard to the visa application, please contact the University of Pretoria, Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, directly (Prof. Andre van Zyl, email@example.com).
Depending on the individual candidate’s preference for surgery or prosthodontics, we will expect some experience and postgraduate training for the candidate to participate in clinical treatment of patients. Applicants must hold a TOEFL or IELTS certificate as proof of proficiency in English for non-native English speakers by the beginning of the ITI Scholarship program as this is a prerequisite for obtaining the limited license necessary to work with patients. The language certificate must be valid (no older than two years) at the time of application for the limited license.
