Close to 350 professionals in implant dentistry from 15 countries attended the third ITI Congress Southern Africa which was held in Midrand, Johannesburg. The congress ran under the title “60 Years! Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow“, referring to the definition of osseointegration in 1953 by Professor P. I. Brånemark, and focused on the following topics: Current knowledge in implant dentistry, The healthy compromised implant, Controversial issues in implant dentistry, Peri-implantitis and its current issues, Treatment planning and Emerging techniques. The lectures and case presentations were given by well-known South African as well as two international speakers, Steve Eckert and Anthony Sclar from the US. ITI President David Cochran also attended the congress and talked about the evolution of dental implants and the ITI.
“The lectures provided the audience with exactly the program and content we envisaged for the congress and what we wanted the attendees to get from the program”, said Christiaan Vorster, who together with Paul van Zyl and Gerrit Wyma made up the Scientific Program Committee. “We had very positive feedback from most of the attendees regarding the congress content and organization. They felt that it was not just another dental congress and that there were small things added and done to make the congress more enjoyable.”
A poster and case presentation competition was also part of the congress, which attracted 100 more participants than in 2011 when the Section held its last national congress.
