ITI Consensus Conference and Annual General Meeting in Bern

The ITI presents the latest treatment guidelines and welcomes Professor David L. Cochran as new ITI President

Basel, Switzerland, May 2, 2013 – More than 100 experts from the field of implant dentistry met in Bern from April 23 to 25 to participate in the 5th ITI Consensus Conference. The aim of Consensus Conferences organized by the International Team for Implantology (ITI) is to define evidence-based treatment guidelines based on the latest literature. The Conference findings were presented at the ITI Annual Conference 2013 on April 26 that also took place in Bern and was attended by 550 dental professionals.

During the three-day Consensus Conference, scientists and clinicians from 32 countries debated which clinical methods were supported by the latest data and the following areas came under discussion by the five working groups:

• Current surgical and radiographic techniques
• Restorative materials and techniques for implant dentistry
• Optimizing esthetic outcomes
• Loading protocols
• Prevention and management of technical and biological complications

The Consensus Statements defined by the Conference will be published in a supplement to the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants (JOMI) in early 2014. An electronic version will be made available to ITI Fellows and Members beforehand.

“Given the rapid progress in implant dentistry, various methodologies and new developments, it is important for clinicians to have access to current evidence-based information and clinical treatment guidelines. The ITI Consensus Conference offers a scientific assessment of the latest developments and supports dental professionals towards integrating the latest treatment standards into their daily work,” commented Dr. Stephen Chen, Chair of the ITI Education Core Group.

Professor David L. Cochran new ITI President

The Annual Conference was followed by the ITI Annual General Meeting, at the end of which Professor David L. Cochran took up his duties as President of the ITI. He takes over from Professor Daniel Buser, whose term of office came to an end after almost four years: “During Daniel Buser’s term of office, the ITI grew substantially and, with a membership of more than 15,000, it is now the largest international implant dentistry organization worldwide. It is an honor for me to take over this office from Daniel Buser and I am looking forward to the coming four years,” said Professor David Cochran.

Professor Cochran has been an ITI Fellow since 1992 and has always been closely involved in the running and ongoing development of the organization. As the Chair of the ITI Research Committee, he was a member of the Board from 2003 to 2007 and was re-elected to the Board in 2011. David Cochran is currently Chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, USA. He is a member of various dental organizations and was President of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) in 2012.

In addition, Professor Daniel Wismeijer (Academic Center for Dentistry, Amsterdam, Netherlands) was elected Board member at large during the ITI Annual Meeting. He replaces Dr. Anthony Dickinson (Glen Iris, Australia). Professor Lisa Heitz-Mayfield (University of Sydney, Australia) succeeds Professor Thomas Taylor (University of Connecticut, USA) as Chair of the ITI Research Committees and member of the Board of Directors.

ITI Honorary Fellowship for Professor Urs Belser

During the ITI Annual General Meeting, Professor Urs Belser was made an ITI Honorary Fellow for his more-than 20 years of service to the ITI. Professor Belser was Chair of the Swiss Section from 2004 to 2006 as well as a member of the ITI Development Committee and later sat on the ITI Research Committee. He was Professor and Head of the Department of Fixed Prosthodontics and Occlusion of the University Geneva School of Dental Medicine until recently and is currently a visiting professor at the Dental Clinic at the University of Bern. As the new Editor-in-Chief of the ITI’s journal Forum Implantologicum, he will continue to contribute actively to the ITI.
